Every year we start fresh like young wide eyed children looking at the world in amazement. Looking forward to what the new year might bring, we all set goals, make resolutions, eat collard greens and blackeye peas.
Instead of just setting goals and making resolutions I decided to set a different tone for 2012. I decided to do. To catch my first shoal bass of 2012 on the first day of 2012. Why wait?
How many times do each of us set goals, but fail to meet them due to inaction. There’s always a sticking point that must be pushed through or else failure ensues.
In 2012 I don’t want to make time for failure. I want to be too busy to fail. Too busy doing. There’s no sticking as long as I’m busy doing and moving forward, right?
So, I hit the river on January 1, 2012 in search of my first shoal bass of 2012. The late night New Year’s Eve festivities had me starting late. I didn’t make it to the river at the crack of dawn; but I finally woke from my New Year’s slumber and headed out the door around 9:30 a.m.
After a short trip I was on the river at 11 a.m. and instantly felt revived and fresh in 2012. The river was a great way to shake New Year’s Eve.
In fact, winter is a great time to be on the river. It’s a peaceful time that relaxes. Usually there’s not another soul around. The perfect place to get away and make everything right. The perfect place to begin a new year.
The river had been running high for about a week, but the last few days it subsided and dropped to manageable levels. The water was still stained, however.
I had a chatterbait tied on from a previous trip so I went with it. I figured it would work well as it gives out a heavy vibration so fish can key in on it. Perfect for stained water.
I was right. The chatterbait worked and my 2012 kayak river fishing year started off with a BANG! I was on the river for less than 10 minutes when I greeted my first fish of 2012. A nice 4 lb shoal bass hit right next to my kayak and rang in the New Year!
Shoal bass, check.

Failure is not an option.. I like this post.
Way to get it done on the first day out in 2012.
Booyah! That’s a pig. Way to start out the year.
Wish I could hit the water this time of year.Unfortunately my lures will just bounce across the ice.Great start to the year.Good on ya!
Thanks guys! It’s always nice to start out the new year with a nice one. Hopefully it won’t jinx me.
Stephen, I’m about to head out to the water in a pair of shorts. Don’t hate me. It’s just unseasonably warm this year. And living down south probably has something to do with it too. Take care bud!
Sean
